The Role of IS in Manufacturing Automation

Abstract

In most organizations, the IS staff's support of the manufacturing function includes order processing, production scheduling, and assisting in the selection of hardware and software. As the technologies of the manufacturing environment change, however, so must the role of the IS department. This article discusses current technologies in manufacturing automation and their effects on the IS department.

Jayant V. Saraph is professor of management at St Cloud State University, St Cloud MN. He received his PhD in operations management from the University of Minnesota.

Tor Guimaraes

Tor Guimaraes is professor of information systems and chairman of the business computer information systems department at St Cloud State University. He received his PhD in management information systems from the University of Minnesota.
