ABSTRACT
Two examples are offered to illustrate a helping technique involving the relinquishment of hope. When patients and/or families are investing energies in unrealistic fantasies, helping professionals are encouraged to facilitate the refocusing of such energies toward more appropriate goals. Such interventions are reframed and viewed as a kind of giving, recognizing that hopefulness can be dysfunctional in certain situations.
