Stress Among Hospice Directors: A Growing Concern

SUMMARY

Self-report questionnaires returned by directors of hospice programs indicate the job involves numerous problems and stresses. However, burnout appears to be relatively low. Directors cite the challenge and flexibility of the job as reasons for remaining in the position. A majority of directors indicated they would continue to serve their programs indefinitely.

Gretchen M. Brown, MSW, is Executive Director of Hospice of the Bluegrass in Lexington, KY. She has been Executive Director since 1982. Formerly, she was director of a drug and alcohol abuse program for the 17 county Kentucky Bluegrass region. She was chair of the National Hospice Organization’s Licensure and Reimbursement Committee in 1985 and 1986.
