Abstract
Four affects (anxiety, depression, anger, and contentment) were assessed using three measures: ratings of prestructured drawings of people (PR), self-ratings (SR), and results of Psychiatric Symptom Index (PSI). Forty psychiatric inpatients and 44 staff controls (mental health professionals and trainees) served as research participants. Staff participants reported lower levels of dysphoric affect than patients. Except for positive relationships for anger (PR and SR, and PR and PSI) and depression (PR and SR), these three measures showed no relationship in assessing the same affect. The experimenters' ability to predict the affects suggested by prestructured images was confirmed by subjects' responses. For use in future research, four images were selected as being highly suggestive of one of the target affects, and minimally suggestive of the other three.
