What Differentiates ACOAs and Non-ACOAs on a Black College Campus?

Pages 57-63 | Published online: 09 Jul 2010

Abstract

This study was designed to determine the prevalence of alcoholic children of alcoholics (ACOAs) on a Black college campus, compare functioning in the family of origin and the availability of social support, and determine the factor that best differentiates ACOAs from non-ACOAs. Nineteen percent of the population studied were classified as ACOAs. Little difference was found in family functioning and social support for ACOAs compared with non-ACOAs, except in the support they received from their mothers. The factor that best differentiated the ACOAs from the non-ACOAs was their drinking level.
