Abstract
Quantum Leap, one of a number of contemporary media texts which features a male protagonist who is mistakenly perceived as female, represents how television constructs gender as a category while reassuring the audience that sexuality is a biological given. The series interrogates gender through statements concerning fashion and technology, the hero's response to male privilege when he is perceived as female, and the subtle acknowledgment and rejection of homoerotic desire.
