Abstract
In order to articulate femmes' feminist potential, many theorists emphasize femmes' similarities to butches and other queer insiders. Yet femmes' subversive power does not have to be limited to their capacity to perform the same transgressions as these other figures. How can we articulate femmes' feminist potential on their own terms, as well? Conceiving the femme as rhetorical enables us to articulate the figure's function as a bridge between the straight and the queer.
