Abstract

The remote sensing objectives of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Program are reviewed with attention to the fields of oceanology, hydrology, geology, forestry, and agriculture. Ground and space systems which can be used in implementing the program are outlined, with particular emphasis on their relative cost effectiveness and on the optimal combination of sensors for remote sensing satellite payloads. The correspondence between user requirements and sensor capabilities is evaluated for several existing remote sensing systems.
