REMOTE SENSING METHODS FOR COMPILING MAPS OF DESERTIFICATION

&
Pages 325-330 | Published online: 15 May 2013

Abstract

Procedures for the compilation of large-, medium-, and small-scale desertification maps are described which are based on space images, aerial photographs, and surface observations. Information used in compilation of the maps includes degradation of the vegetation cover, wind and water erosion, and human-induced desertification and salinization of irrigated soils. A method for evaluating and mapping the risk of desertification also is described and illustrated using materials for three Central Asian republics.
