Isotopic composition of groundwater in Kufra, Libya

Abstract

The results of the isotopic composition of shallow and deep groundwaters from the Kufra region indicate the fossil origin of these waters and that they are not recharged under the present climatic conditions. The virtual absence of tritium and the radiocarbon ages of these waters show that they were formed mainly in past pluvial periods. Deuterium and oxygen‐18 results indicate that the groundwaters were recharged under cooler climatic conditions. These results may explain the origin of the lateamountsof groundwater which existed in the region. Moreover, the isotopic composition of shallow and deep groundwater are slightly different, indicating discontinuity between the two aquifers and the possibility of different recharge periods and mechanisms.
