Abstract
In the western Tigris basin, Turkey is developing a £4 billion project to irrigate 0.6 million hectares, to generate 8 billion KWh a−1 electricity with 2,200 MW installed capacity. The plan encompasses the construction of over one dozen large dams and half a dozen large hydroelectric plants. The pumping requirements for irrigation will be in the order of 1.6 billion KWh a−1 with a total pump capacity of 780 MW.
