Three alternative routes have been suggested for the diversion of water from the Huang He (Yellow river) to the area of Beijing and Tianjin. A feasibility study has found that diversion from Baiper is the best choice for several reasons: the river bed is stable there, water is reliably available and has a low silt content, and the total investment cost would be lower than elsewhere.
