Abstract
This article details the circumstances surrounding the establishment of the first Northern Ireland Affairs Select Committee in 1994, and considers its effectiveness in the period up to the 1997 election. Although its foundation was controversial, the Committee undertook a number of worthy investigations, mainly of a non‐contentious character, which are examined. The article concludes with an evaluation of its performance.
