The superego and its vicissitudes in contemporary society

Abstract

Assuming that psychic reality and social phenomena are two sides of the same social totality, this article attempts to discuss the building up of the concept of superego in the Freudian text emphasizing its social roots and the function it performs as the representative of the symbolic law. Critical turning points in the development of the concept are presented and possible theoretical consequences of Freud's argument in “Civilization and its Discontents” are questioned when considered against the background of our present society determined by globalization and consumption. The author concludes by suggesting that the contemporary superego may represent an erractic reaction against the conditions prevalent in the social realm. Thus it appears to be rather the heir to the initial state of helplessness than the result of a paternal identification. That could account for its role as the representative of the symbolic law.

Garcia CM. Das Über-Ich und seine Wandlungen in der heutigen Gesellschaft

In der Annahme, daß psychische Realität und soziale Phänomene zwei Seiten derselben sozialen Ganzheit sind, versucht dieser Artikel den Aufbau des Konzepts des Über-Ichs in dem Freudschen Text wie auch seine sozialen Wurzeln und die Funktion, die es als Repräsentant des symbolischen Gesetzes ausübt, zu diskutieren. Es werden kritische Wendepunkte in der Entwicklung des Konzeptes dargestellt und mögliche theoretische Konsequenzen von Freuds Argument im “Das Unbehagen in der Kultur” hinterfragt, wenn diese vor dem Hintergrund unserer gegenwärtigen Gesellschaft, die durch Globalisierung und Konsum bestimmt sind, betrachtet werden. Der Autor schließt mit dem Vorschlag, daß das heutige Über-Ich eine erratische Reaktion gegenüber den Bedingungen, die im sozialen Bereich herrschen, darstellen könne. So scheint es eher das Erbe in Bezug auf das Anfangsstadium der Hilflosigkeit zu sein als das Ergebnis einer paternalen Identifikation. Das könnte für seine Rolle als Repräsentant des symbolischen Gesetzes verantwortlich sein.

Aceptando que la realidad psiquica y los fenomenos sociales son dos lados de la misma totalidad social, este articulo intenta discutir la construcción del concepto de Superyo en el texto Freudiano, enfatizando sus raices sociales y la función que realiza como representante simbólico de la ley. Se presentan puntos de vista criticos en el desarrollo del concepto y posibles consecuencias teóricas del argumento de Freud en ”Civilización y sus descontentos” cuando consieró el origen de nuestra actual sociedad como determinada por la globalización y el consumo. El autor concluye sugiriendo que el Superyo contemporáneo puede representar una equivocada reacción contra las condiciones prevalentes en la esfera social. Así parece más bien ser el heredero del estado inicial de indefensión que el resultado de una identificación parental. Esto podria justificar su rol como el representante simbolico de la ley.
