Hungary was the only country in Eastern Europe where psychoanalysis was practiced during the communist regime. The author describes the conditions for psychoanalytic work under these years. The system of control under so called “soft dictatorship” and the repercussions of repressive tolerance on transference-countertransference and other aspects of the psychoanalytic situation are discussed.
