Summary
Einar Heldal, ‘AIDS: Consequences for Health and Development’, Forum for Development Studies, No. 1, 1993, pp. 49–61.
The article describes the spread of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and discusses its consequences, interventions carried out to prevent and cope with it, and the role the fight against AIDS should be given in future development aid. The epidemic spreads very rapidly, mainly in developing countries, mainly heterosexually and increasingly affecting women and children. The socio-economic consequences are dramatic, and come on top of an economic recession. Poverty is both a cause and effect of the epidemic. The main interventions are reduction of risk behaviour, treatment of sexually transmitted diseases and securing safe blood transfusions. The importance of involving sectors outside health and improved coordination by national AIDS programmes are stressed. Social science and medicine need to strengthen the collaboration to combat the epidemic.
