Abstract
As a result of recent trends Norwegian development research has changed significantly. The thematic focus is broader and a broader spectrum of disciplines is involved. This means that development research should no longer be seen as a special niche, but as an integrated part of the Norwegian research community and, as such, an important contributor to the internationalisation and globalization of Norwegian research and to a more global research agenda. These trends make development research more relevant not only to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, but also to other ministries who in turn could—or should—be willing to provide funds for such research.
Globalisation and its consequences for development research has been an important topic for discussion in the Research Council of Norway. The article gives a brief introduction to the tasks and strategies of the Research Council as a government adviser, funding agency and network builder within the field of development research. Focus is on research priorities, funding issues and mechanisms for supporting research.
