Abstract
The contribution provides a brief background of a major research programme of the Research Council of Norway, ‘Globalisation and Marginalisation: Development Paths in the South’ and identifies some of its characteristics, diversity, multi- and interdisciplinarity and partiality. Arguments are put forward for increased research cooperation and reflections are made about the value, conditions and challenges of development research. Particular emphasis is the need for independent research in order to address issues and problems associated with various processes of globalisation.
