Geir Heierstad is Associate Professor of South Asia studies at the Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages, University of Oslo. He has worked on India's foreign affairs, as well as democracy and political culture in India.He is the co-editor of India's Democracies (Primus Books 2014) and The Politics of Caste in West Bengal (Routledge 2014). He is currently in the process of finalising his monograph Illusions of Tradition: Branding of Caste in Calcutta.

1Kautilya (or Chanakya or Vishnugupta) is identified as author of Arthaśāstra, an ancient treaty on politics.
