Pages 33-53 | Published online: 10 Jul 2009

Abstract

In this article a narrative approach is utilized to examine the life of Clive Robbins obtained through oral history. Clive Robbins, co-developer and pioneer of the improvisational music therapy approach known as Creative Music Therapy (or the Nordoff–Robbins approach) has made significant contributions to the development of music therapy throughout the world for nearly fifty years. Through a series of qualitative interviews, a narrative was developed tracing Clive Robbins' life from his birth in 1927 to the death of his wife, Carol Robbins, in 1996. Relationships between major themes in his life and in Creative Music Therapy are discussed.
