The Spatial Implications of Rural Adjustment

Pages 43-44 | Published online: 06 May 2008

Abstract

A sound policy response to the problems generated by rural adjustment requires an understanding of the forces shaping change in non-metropolitan settlements. The issues involved are complex and require an understanding of the economic, demographic and social processes that are shaping country towns. It is apparent that little substantive research on this subject has been undertaken. In response to this lack of knowledge, the NSW government has initiated an inter-disciplinary study to examine the processes of change affecting nonmetropolitan settlements in the state. The project is being co-ordinated by the Department of Environment and Planning, and funded by seven government departments. It is being managed by the Planning Research Centre of the University of Sydney, and involves academics from the Universities of New England, Sydney and NSW. The study is organized into various modules which attempt to reflect the range of forces acting on country towns. Module 1 examines the impact of on-farm changes on country towns.
