Abstract
The Australian Railways Union has been engaged in an active and political programme to develop the rail industry for well over a decade. There are many dimensions to the industry called ‘the railways’. High speed rail operations will represent the pinnacle of railway performance, in one sense. In another, the current (and planned) bulk haulage and electric passenger operations of, for example, the Queensland (government) Railways represent considerable technological and operational sophistication. However, these operations do not receive the acclaim reserved for the proposed VFT.
