Abstract

Leon Bix Beiderbecke was an American cornettist, pianist and composer. He was born in Davenport, Iowa, on 10 March 1903, and died in New York, N.Y. on 6 August 1931 at the early age of twenty-eight years. The major part of Beiderbecke's professional career began in October 1923, when he joined the Wolverine Orchestra. He left that group in October 1924, and after a short try-out with the Jean Goldkette Orchestra became a member of Frank Trumbauer's Orchestra in St. Louis. Between September 1926, and September 1927, Beiderbecke worked in the Jean Goldkette Orchestra. He joined the Paul Whiteman Orchestra in late October 1927, and remained with that group until September 1929.
