Notes

1. Australian child protection services are managed by the States and differ between them, while the family court is a Commonwealth responsibility. Nevertheless, many characteristics are common to child protection services across Australia, just as Australian child protection services and the Australian family court share many similarities with their counterparts in other English-speaking countries.

2. See also Barnett (Citation2000), Hart (Citation2006) and Breckenridge (Citation1999).

3. Gardner developed the ‘Sex Abuse Legitimacy Scale’ (SALS) as a device for use with children to establish whether allegations of sexual abuse were legitimate or fabricated (Gardner Citation1987).

4. Anne is the pseudonym for a participant in the initial research project on maternal alienation.
