Textualizing Evita: “Oh, What a Circus! Oh, What a Show!”

Pages 215-232 | Published online: 06 May 2014

Abstract

Although Eva Duarte de Perón was an historical figure whose life can be reconstructed on the basis of certain historical data and documents, a representation of her political and cultural significance is no longer a question of fidelity to history but of fidelity to an idea or image of her that encompasses what she has come to represent. Taking this notion as a point of departure and considering it in light of “El simulacro,” a short story by Jorge Luis Borges, Santa Evita, a novel by Tomás Eloy Martínez, and the musical drama Evita by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber as filmed by Alan Parker, this article provides a commentary on how textualizations of Evita's story take as their primary cue the idea that her life was a spectacle or performance already textualized through the roles she played and the manner in which she was represented and represented herself in the real world.
