Se Représenter les Amériques Durant la Guerre Froide: Amérique Latine et Sociologie Étasunienne

Résumé

Dans notre article, nous présentons les résultats de notre analyse de deux corpus qui ont été constitués afin d'appréhender la réaction de la sociologie étasunienne face à l'actualité de l'Amérique latine durant la période 1945–70. Nos corpus sont constitués d'articles de cinq revues de sociologie ainsi que des thèses et des mémoires déposés dans les départements de sociologie aux États-Unis durant la période. Nous montrons que la sociologie réagit à l'actualité. Elle est, parfois même, plutôt critique à l'égard de la position du gouvernement des États-Unis. Cependant, nous avons également dégagé deux processus de transformation lexicale (dé-folklorisation et dé-exotisation) qui montrent que la sociologie, sans utiliser une logique d'affrontement, se représente l'Amérique latine dans les termes des courants économiques et sociaux qui orientent, en partie, les changements et positions de la politique étrangère des États-Unis à l'égard des pays du sud des Amériques.

Abstract

This article discusses the results of an analysis of two fields of study and attempts to measure the reaction of US sociology toward current events in Latin America during the period 1945–70. Our field consists of articles from five journals of sociology as well as the doctoral and master's dissertations from all departments of sociology in the United States. The article shows that sociology reacts to current events. Sociology is even, sometimes, also critical of the position of the US government. Furthermore, two process of lexical transformation (de-folklorization and de-exotization) are also framed. These processes show how much, behind the logics of confrontation, the field of sociology represented Latin America in the terms of economic and social currents that, partially, oriented the standpoints of US foreign policy toward Central and South America.
