Cultural Humility in Art Therapy and Child and Youth Care: Reflections on Practice by Sikh Women (L'humilité culturelle en art-thérapie et les soins aux enfants et aux jeunes : Réflexions sur la pratique de femmes sikhes)

ABSTRACT

Art has the political potential to create change on both an individual and systemic level. The realization of this comes through in a therapeutic practice that is anti-oppressive and accounts for power in relationships and institutions. As a child and youth care practitioner and an art therapist, we have respectively used cultural humility as a conceptual framework with which to undertake radical youth work. This framing of youth work acknowledges the power in relationships between adults and youth as being a colonial construct and uses relational practice as a means of deconstructing it. By reflecting on our experiences in practice, we propose a set of critical tools, from the healthcare framework of cultural humility, for working with underserved populations. By highlighting the populations we work with as being underserved, we acknowledge that their oppression is a result of the systems in which they exist, and which fail to serve them equitably.

RÉSUMÉ

L'art a le potentiel politique de créer des changements tant au niveau individuel que systémique. Cette réalisation se dégage d'une pratique thérapeutique anti-oppressive qui rend compte du pouvoir dans les relations et les institutions. En tant qu'intervenante et art-thérapeute auprès techniques d'éducation spécialisée, nous avons respectivement utilisé l'humilité culturelle comme cadre conceptuel pour entreprendre un travail radical avec la jeunesse. Une telle approche du travail jeunesse reconnaît les relations de pouvoir entre adultes et jeunes comme étant une construction coloniale puis utilise la pratique relationnelle comme un moyen de la déconstruire. Suite à des réflexions sur nos expériences pratiques, nous proposons un ensemble d'outils critiques, issus du cadre de l'humilité culturelle en soins de santé et pour l'intervention auprès des populations mal desservies. En soulignant que nous travaillons avec des populations mal desservies, nous reconnaissons que leur oppression est le résultat des systèmes dans lesquels celles-ci évoluent, systèmes qui ne parviennent pas à les servir équitablement.
