Catherine C. Mitchell is an associate professor of mass communication at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Some of the material in this article appeared in her 1987 dissertation at the University of Tennessee and in a paper presented at the 1989 meeting of the Southeastern Women’s Studies Association.
