A naturalistic transactional approach to compliance‐gaining behavior

Pages 119-124 | Published online: 06 Jun 2009

Abstract

This study presents a naturalistic approach to compliance‐gaining communication by observing naturally occuring compliance‐gaining messages in a role‐playing situation. The results are analyzed through simple raw frequency descriptive statistics. The results indicate that individuals use an average of three compliance‐gaining attempts during persuasive encounters that contain resistance. Results also indicate the types of strategies used most frequently and patterns of strategies that emerge during natural interaction.
