Abstract
The Gibbs free energies of formation of the magnesium tantalates have been determined in the temperature range 1173-1293 K by operating the following electrochemical cells involving MgF2 as the solid electrolyte
O2(g), Pt/MgO, MgF2/MgF2/MgOTa2O5. Ta2O5. MgF2/Pt, O2(g)
O2(g), Pt/MgO, MgF2/MgF2/MgOTa2O5, 4MgO-Ta2O5. MgF2/Pt, O2(g)
Stable, reproducible EMFs obtained from the above cells were used to calculate the Gibbs free energies of formation of MgO-Ta2O5 and 4MgOTa2O5 from the component oxides in the temperature range 1173-1293 K.
