Abstract
The review article primarily deals with the studies on the chemical separation of the transplutonium elements, either from their production matrices or from the neighbouring elements, through liquid-liquid extraction and extraction chromatographic techniques. The existence of the artificially produced superheavy elements in their different valence states in aqueous media and the mechanism involved in the extraction of the elemental specis with the liquid ion exchangers have been discussed in detail. Applications of the liquid exchangers, both cationic and anionic, in the extraction separation of the transplutonium elements have been presented in Tables I and II.
