Abstract

The partition coefficient between heptane or chloroform and 0.1 M NaCI aqueous solution, and the acid dissociation constants of 5-alkyloxymethyl-8-quinolinol (HO„Q) were determined. Also, the extraction and back-extraction behavior, extraction equilibrium and kinetics, and the separation of Cu{11) [1, 2], Mo(VI), [3, 4], Pd(II), [5], Ga(IlI) [6], Co(Il) [7] and Ni(ll) [7] with novel 8-quinolinol derivatives (HA) have been investigated. Cu(II) was extracted with H08Q, HM08Q, and 5-(4-nitrophenylazo)-7-(4-ethyI-l-methytoctyl}-8-quinolinol (HNEQ) into chloroform as Cu(A)2. The extraction constant ( Kex) increases in the following order of Kelex 100 < 8-quinolinol <HO8Q< HNEQ. Mo(VI) is extracted with 5-octyloxymethyl-8-quinolinol <H08Q) and 2-methyl-5-octyloxymethyl-8-quinolinol (HMOgQ) from a strongly acidic solution as Mo02(02Q) 2 and Mo02(M02Q) 2, respectively. The extraction constant ( Kxe= [Mo02(A) 2] org/ [M0O4] [H+ ] 2[HA]„rg) for H08Q was about three orders of magnitude larger than that for HM0Q. Mo02(M08Q) 2 is more easily stripped than Mo02(08Q) 2 with a dilute aqueous ammonia solution. Mo(Vl) can be selectively separated from other metal ions such as Cu(ll) with HOaQ and HMOaQ. The extraction constant, KJ = [Pd(A) 2][H+] 2/ [Pd2+][HA]) of Pd(Il) with HA increases in the following order of HM08Q<8-quinolinol < HOaQ < Kelex 100. Above pH = 1 (HC1), Pd{MOgQ) 2 in chloroform was completely back-extracted with 0.3 M SCN in the pH range of 2.0-3.0. Pd(II) can be separated with HMOgQ from other metal ions by the combined procedures of extraction and back-extraction. The Ga(II1)-H08Q, Ga(III)-HM08Q, Ga(HI)-5-hexyloxymethyl-8-quinolinol (HM06Q), and Ga(III)-2-butyl-5-hexyloxymethyl-8-quinolinol (HBOeQ) complexes extracted in heptane from a perchloric acid medium were Ga(0eQ) c, Ga(0H)(Hb0)(M08Q) 2, Ga(0H)(H20){M02Q) 2 and Ga(OH)(H20) (NBOeQ} 2, respectively. The 2-ferr-butyl-5-hexyloxymethyl-8-quinolinol did not exhibit any reactivity toward Ga(III). HNB06Q exhibited very high selectivity toward Ga(III) in the presence of Al(III). The extraction rate of Co(II) with HO8Q into chloroform was larger than of NI(II).Co(II) can be separated from NI(II) based 0on the differential extraction rate.
