A New Model for Case Analysis: Iterative Triadic Thinking

Abstract

To enhance students' case writing and analysis, this article proposes a triadic process for presenting arguments. Students are asked to construct a sequence of well-argued solutions to the problem(s) of the organization given in the case. Instead of just one good solution, students are asked to generate one or more additional but equally plausible alternatives having different bases and outcomes. To settle the conflict among the candidate solutions, a grand resolution of the competing ideas is fashioned that not only draws upon the best features of each, but may also incorporate totally new features.

This model, built upon a well-known mode of philosophical thought and systems analysis, enhanced students' skill in logical argumentation, ability to see other points of view, and perceived value of continuing to use case analysis in the workplace.
