Alternatives to Instructor Assessment of Class Participation

Pages 10-14 | Published online: 31 Mar 2010

Abstract

The desire for increased student involvement in the learning process extends to the arena of assessment. This study examined peer and self-assessment as alternatives to instructor assessment of class participation in the MBA strategy course. Data from three samples did not provide unequivocal support for their use in formal grading procedures. However, the study suggests that the use of peer assessment provides a necessary feedback to students and instructors and supports the broader objectives of class participation.
