Canadian election broadcasting: Political practices and radio regulation 1919–1939

Pages 175-188 | Accepted 01 Feb 1985, Published online: 18 May 2009

Abstract

The Canadian broadcasting system historically has been expected to provide equality of opportunity for political parties at election time. As a result, political broadcasting has been subjected to strict regulatory controls that were first applied between 1919 and 1939. These strictures governing election broadcasting accompanied changes in radio technology and campaign innovations introduced by the political parties and their media advisers during the interwar years.
