This study, based on newsroom observation and videotapes of newscasts, examines how journalists at one major‐market television station adapted their everyday work routine to cover a major plane crash. After identifying six main steps in the everyday process, a five‐step what‐a‐story process is described that closely parallels that everyday routine. Typification of story elements and news sources was found to be a key strategy for newsworkers’ efforts.
