Profile: Information needs during viewing of serious and routine news

Pages 453-466 | Accepted 01 Aug 1992, Published online: 18 May 2009

Abstract

This survey found differences in information needs during the viewing of serious news versus routine news. During routine news there were more basic awareness questions, while during serious news there were more questions regarding decision making, opinion formation, and checking for accuracy. The study suggests that routine news media could enhance the informing process by including analytic perspectives to engage viewers more in decision making and opinion development.
