Abstract
A growing concern today is the fitness level of youths across the nation. This study focused on the fitness level of 122 fifth grade students. The purpose of this study was to measure the fitness level of the fifth grade students and then determine the effects of a six-week aerobic fitness exercise program. The components of fitness that were measured in the pre- and post-test included body fat composition and aerobic capacity. Physical education teachers implemented a six-week session conducted three days a week. The results were analyzed and indicated a significant difference in submaximal oxygen uptake (VO2 submax) of the experimental group as compared to the control group. The VO2 submax is more easily understood as a measurement of cardiorespiratory efficiency. Assessment of the body composition data showed no statistically significant change between the two groups.
