Abstract
Background. Although patient education in oncology is essential, it can be difficult to explain complicated procedures such as radiotherapy verbally or using written materials. Audiovisual materials can greatly assist in explaining this type of information to patients, but they are usually time‐consuming and expensive to produce. Methods. At the Fraser Valley Cancer Centre, computer‐based video production has been initiated to improve patient comprehension about radiotherapy. This article describes the method used to easily produce and evaluate high‐quality, low‐cost educational videos for cancer patients about to undergo radiotherapy. Results and conclusions. Results of the evaluation indicate that the video is potentially better than other sources of information and helps to increase understanding about radiation therapy and possibly decrease the stress and anxiety patients have about radiation therapy.
