Notes
1 The term “border” refers throughout the Special Issue to what would be more commonly referred to as international borders or international boundaries. The terms are used interchangeably.
2 According to Agnew, the concept of the territorial trap rests on three important assumptions. The first is that states have exclusive power within their territories as represented by the concept of sovereignty. Second, domestic and foreign affairs are separate realms with different rules, allowing for political debate within the state borders and dominance of state interest beyond borders. Third, the territorial state acts as a container of modern society (Agnew Citation2003, 53–54).
3 On the one hand, observing virtual communities such as Facebook or other means of social media, the argument can be made that community no longer requires a spatial element (Kok, Lee, and Chong Citation2015). On the other hand, the argument can also be made that the spatial component of any virtual community is global.
