Notes
1. Although the notion of “abroad” is constructed and in need of critical analyses, this themed section uses the term because it is currently widely used. Some suggest a more inclusive notion of “study away” because learning experiences similar to study abroad occur in domestic places as long as one recognizes some sort of difference (Hovland et al. Citation2009). Because this themed section includes the case of mainland Japanese traveling to Okinawa, currently a prefecture of Japan though formerly a separate country with a complex sense of belonging to Japan, this themed section uses the notion of “study abroad/away”. Throughout this introduction, however, I use the term “study abroad” for readability.
