American Indian, Puerto Rican and Black Urbanization

Pages 119-134 | Published online: 28 Jul 2009

Abstract

The first large scale migration of Native Americans to urban areas occurred in the last 30 years. The influence of social, cultural, economic and government forces on the American Indian migrant's decision-making and spatial behavior are presented and compared to that of Puerto Rican and Black urban migrants. The similarities and differences among these urban migrant groups are analyzed to determine what their experiences may indicate about the future processes and patterns of American Indian urbanization.
