Unravelling the Quebec-Canada- USA Linguistic Triangle

Pages 95-103 | Published online: 07 Mar 2011

Abstract

The choice of English and!or French as official languages in Canada is generally considered to be dictated by internal considerations of minority-majority relations and of the interplay of power between provincial—principally Quebec—and federal governments. While not denying this thesis, the present study demonstrates that language policies and attitudes are also largely influenced by the country's external relations, notably with the United States.
