Abstract
The country church is an important feature in the landscape in Southern Appalachia, and churches play a major role in the social life of the region. Union County, Georgia, is a small rural county that appears to be almost “over-churched.” Baptist churches are most numerous, almost equally divided between Southern Baptist and independent. Methodist churches rank second and Churches of God third. Interdenominational churches are strong. The recent in-migration of new people, chiefly retirees, has brought in new denominations. Social, historical, and geographical factors help to explain and maintain the large number of churches.
