Abstract
In the early 1970s two groups of Old Order Amish started settlements in St. Lawrence County, New York. In 1981, after one decade of settlement activity, there was a survey of these two groups that revealed similar patterns of origin and growth. This article reports on a second survey of the St. Lawrence County Amish after another decade. Changes occurring in the second decade may be of critical importance to an understanding of Amish settlements for one group has continued to grow while the other has markedly decreased in size. This may be attributable to the development of a feeling of homeland, a sense of belonging in that place, within the successful settlement.
