Abstract
How are information systems investments and strategic planning associated with information system design? This question is examined in a study of home health care agencies. The literature suggests that a strategic competitive advantage can be gained if information systems design and strategy development are addressed simultaneously. This proposition is particularly important in the health care field where information technology and information systems are playing a critical role in the delivery of services. Results from this study suggest that home health agencies, which routinely plan information system revisions/upgrades, and that rely on outside vendors for computer support, report better attainment of design criteria. Planning process measures were not consistently associated with information systems design effectiveness. The implications for information systems in home health agencies, health care organizations, and other organizations are discussed, as well as the implications for information systems research.
