Abstract

This paper examines a model training program developed at Illinois State University as a response to the current shortage in information technology (IT) workers. The training program attempts to break down barriers that inhibit qualified persons from entering the IT field and to provide specified training to meet precise industry needs. The program, the Foundation Computing Program, is described as a model of industry-education collaboration that others could emulate. The process used by the program for selecting and training candidates for the IT profession is outlined in detail. The paper also describes the extent of successes of the program thus far in transitioning people to careers in the IT field.
