Abstract
The corporate shift from traditional mainframe computing to enterprise-wide client/server and web-based systems has placed new requirements on Information Systems programs in universities nationwide. To provide graduates these new skills, many programs are turning to Oracle through the Oracle Academic Initiative (OAI) for their systems courses.
Oracle is becoming the product of choice for many corporations since it is scaleable to large applications. However, a modest installation such as is appropriate for university courses requires the same level of expertise and organization required for larger installations, and frequently exceeds the expertise and resources available to academic institutions.
The purpose of this paper is to detail an approach to configuring the Oracle environment for classroom instruction including loading and installing the software, configuring the repository, and setting up users and application systems. The techniques presented here are based on experience with Oracle in the classroom and will provide a straightforward approach to an effective installation of the Oracle environment.
