Abstract
Building on prior research in the IS skills area, a field study of IS professionals is performed to determine if and how IS professionals' competencies change as they gain experience in the workplace. Based on the results of this study, it appears that IS professionals: (1) perform different activities as their careers progress, (2) are required to have different skills as their careers progress, (3) do have different skills at different stages in their careers, and (4) are required to, and have, higher levels of technical skill in early stages and higher levels of non-technical skills in the later stages of their careers.
