Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to compare wages of older (age 40 and older) versus younger (under 40 years of age) Computer Programmers using a sample of 5,547 completed web based surveys. In our analysis, we fit the Human Capital Model based on economic theory to provide a quantitative assessment of the wage differences. The results of this study indicate that older Computer Programmers are paid more than younger Computer Programmers; however, when education and experience differences are taken into account, older Computer Programmers are not making as much as they should be compared to their younger counterparts. When also factoring in “newer skills” (object-oriented programming and SQL skills), this discrepancy amount is substantially lessened.
